Gillan refused, and his stated justification has varied over the years from a dislike of Jewison to his commitments to his band Deep Purple. The movie jettisoned the Broadway show's concept of having Herod be a flaming drag queen.
Jewison apparently thought that was too shocking and would divert attention away from the serious drama in the show. So they changed it to a fat; hippyish; Hugh Hefner-type playboy; wearing a bathing suit; on the beach with several crazy hippyish characters. Though it's not mentioned in the stage show or the film, New Testament John says that Caiaphas was Annas' son-in-law.
The song ended with the lyrics "I've got Kansas on my brain, and here I'm stuck in Maine. This was then reworked into the ballad "I Dont Know" which Yvonne Elliman sung so memorably in the movie and became a Billboard Top hit for her. The song "Then We Are Decided" was not on the original album and was added to the show later as well. In the otherwise funny commentary on DVD by Norman Jewison and Ted Neeley, both turned very sad when they remembered the recent death of their colleague and friend Carl Anderson.
Director of Photography Alex Thomson had to be replaced after a serious fall from a camera rostrum during filming. Two songs that were used for this show were published with different lyrics, and then the lyrics were changed and the songs were shoe horned for this show. The first was "I don't know how to love him", which was published in as the pop song "Kansas Morning".
Also ironically this came out at the same time a string of Devil themed movies came out; "The Exorcist" came out in , the same year as "Jesus Christ Superstar.
The picture was later blown up to 70mm for engagements at Cinerama screen theaters if this had been shot in genuine Todd-AO, no "blowing up" would have been necessary; the picture would have already been made in 70mm.
You've gone and cut him dead. American audiences often misunderstand this line. According to Merriam-Webster. It's a British saying, which explains why Americans don't often get it. In the documentary "Superstars: The Documentary" which focuses on the making of the film, director Norman Jewison and others admit that Jesus Christ Superstar was heavily influenced by Tommy, The Who's Rock Opera, which also focuses on the rise and fall of a messiah type character.
Ironically, Ted Neeley was performing in a stage production of Tommy in playing the title character when Norman Jewison cast him for the Superstar movie. So Neeley starred in the first two rock operas. Also ironically, in the movie's Superstar number Carl Anderson is wearing an open chested white shirt, with white Las Vegas type tassels hanging from his shirt with bell bottoms, a huge belt and a medalion.
Strangely enough this version of Superstar is rated G; and then the version is rated R; although they use virtually the same source materials. Caiaphas' first name was Joseph, ironically. The same name as Jesus' father. They never mention his first name in this musical, or that he was actually the son-in-law of Annas; as well as his successor as the high priest of the Sanhedrin. In a recent Zoom Reunion Podcast of the cast of the original film Yvonne Ellman admits she couldn't dance; but Norman Jewison still wanted Mary Magdalene standing behind Christ in the big "Simon Zealotes" dance number.
So whenever you see her in the number Jewison shoots her from the waist up only. In a recent Zoom cast reunion from the film Ted Neeley states that Jewison hired Carl Anderson after he suggested auditioning him.
As a matter of fact, the two auditioned together; and it was on the basis of their chemistry together that Jewison hired the two of them. In a recent article promoting his upcoming revival of Hair, Broadway legend Ben Vereen talks about how he originated the role of Judas on Broadway and his buddy Carl Anderson understudied for him. Ironically Anderson wound up beating Vereen out for the film role. Vereen says "They the film producers never wanted me in the first place.
Then I got Pippin so I was like 'Bye! Show creators Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, the lyricist and composer respectively, would eventually be Knighted by Her Majesty the Queen for their outstanding contributions to the worlds of music and theater.
The term "superstar" was an old term mostly applied to sports before this show was written. Then in the late 60s artist Andy Warhol, and his celebration of pop art, became a phenomenon unto itself. He has a whole factory of artistic proteges in the Warhol Warehouse whom he intended to turn into "Superstars"; hence the popularization of this word during that era and is application to disposable pop icons. This was the inspiration for calling the show "Jesus Christ Superstar"; and it's tendency to compare Christ in Lloyd Webber's and Rice's opinion to a rock star or another disposable pop artifact.
Likely this number was meant to offset the perceived anti-Semitism of the "This Jesus Must Die" number which comes right after it; in which the Pharisees ominously sing about assassinating Christ.
Then We Are Decided gives the Annas and Caiaphas characters a little more depth and nuance, attempting to make them more three dimensional and show their motivations; so that they would not come across as two dimensional stereotypes. Likely it was part of Norman Jewison's pledge to the press and the Jewish community to not let Jesus Christ Superstar become another anti-Semitic passion play, as many perceived the Broadway show had been. But unfortunately this song did little to stop criticisms from much of the press that the show was antisemitic.
And inspite of it's good intentions "Then It is Decided" aesthetically comes up short from most of the other songs in the show; musically it just doesn't have the same charge; the same inspiration; it seems to be there just as a politically correct footnote: which is why it usually gets dropped from most productions.
Everyone in it, with the exception of Pilate, is Jewish! In Broadwayworld. Rice collaborated with him when he was 25! Both were child prodigies; having just written the hit Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat when they were 17 and 21 respectively! Actually there's only about 20 dancers in that number, and not much more than that in the entire movie! According to Ted Neeley and Norman Jewison on the DVD commentary, the shepherd walking across the frame in the final shot of the film was never intended to be there, and just happened across the shot as they were filming.
Because of the significance of a shepherd in the teachings of Christ, Jewison and the crew were struck profoundly by the timing of this shepherd crossing the field, and kept the shot. They got a perfect sunset, as well as a subtle depiction of the resurrection.
Some of the original lyrics were changed for the film, partly enriching its content "Hosanna", "The Temple" and partly making it more acceptable for a Christian audience.
